The HoB Organizing Committee is offering an exciting post conference study tour to delegates. The tour has been arranged in line with the conference theme. This tour will bring you to see various activities related to conservation and sustainable management of biodiversity and natural resources initiatives that are currently being implemented in Sabah. These include visits to Kawang Recreational Centre, Crocker Nature Centre and Rafflesia Information Centre. Provided below is the information of each of these destination.
Rafflesia Information Centre (RIC)The RIC is one of the Sabah Forestry Department’s efforts in the conservation of the remarkable Rafflesia species. It was established in 1984. Conveniently located by the roadside along the Kota Kinabalu/Tambunan Highway, it is only 58 km from Kota Kinabalu. This area was set aside to protect the habitat of one of the world’s biggest flowers, Rafflesia pricei.
Kawang Recreational Centre (KRC)The Centre is situated in Kawang Forest Reserve which was gazetted since 16 Mac 1957 to maintain the old forest for the conservation of flora and fauna, and to serve as a gravity water reserve and a source of forest produce for the local people nearby. The reserve covers about 1,551 ha and is located in the Papar district, about 30km from Kota Kinabalu city centre. Jungle trekking, visit to the waterfall and sightseeing at Gua Kelawar (Bat Cave) are among the adventure activities here.
Crocker Nature Centre (CNC)The CNC is located in the Crocker Range Park. The park covers 1,399 km2, making it the largest park in Sabah. The CNC was officially opened in February 2004 and is located on a hill about 0.5 km from the main headquarters complex at km 14 Keningau-Kimanis road. Located at an altitude of about 1,000 m asl, the pleasant environment of the montane forest and the panoramic view of Keningau town are among the attractions.
